Building Rapport Through Improved Communication - 1/2 day event

London Restaurant “Scores on the Doors” now online

February 4th, 2008

For those of us planning to eat out in London in the near future, I can reveal that 80,000 of it`s eateries now have their hygiene scores online. With Food Standards Agency (FSA) support it has been decided to unite all the London pilot “Scores on the Door” schemes into one easy to understand website. www.yourlondon.gov.uk/foodscores.

Window stickers with the star rated score will be issued to all businesses.

Whilst it is not obligatory to display your score it is strongly encouraged. The FSA is seeking to make it a legal requirement.

The scoring system is zero stars= very poor and will have enforcement notices in place through to 5 star which is excellent.

This is good news for consumers who are now able to make a choice where to eat based on the hygiene of establishments.

The FSA has commissioned independent research into different “scores on the Doors” schemes running throughout the country with a view to promoting one preferred scheme countrywide.

The Wolds Expo 2007 held at Leisure World in Bridlington

November 15th, 2007

I had the pleasure of exhibiting in the Wolds Expo, the Business and Hospitality show at 3B`s @Leisure World in Bridlington last week.

The exhibition is an annual event supported by the Bridlington Hotel & Guest House Association amongst others.

Not only were the exhibitors all enthusiastic about their products and services, but the visitors were very approachable, friendly and willing to spend time to discuss their business needs and also to pass on their valuable experience.

The event was opened by the wonderful Kim Woodburn AKA the Queen of clean, co-star of the highly successful TV show “How Clean is your House”

Kim visited our exhibit and we had a conversation around whether the houses she depicted on the telly were real life or made up. She stressed that they were absolutely real and that the owners would benefit a great deal if they undertook one of our Food Hygiene Training Courses. They are “dirty Buggers but absolutely wonderful people” she stated. Kim asked me to have a photo taken with her (or was it the other way round!) Any way, I think we look great together- I would say that wouldn`t I?

The day was a great success with the only downside being that attendance seemed to be slightly down from last year.

Role on next year.

Oh! the winner of the free prize draw for a bottle of Moet Chandon Champagne was Gail Egan from the Glencoe Hotel in Bridlington so our congratulations go to her.

Being a Confident, Effective Recruiter

September 28th, 2007

A few facts
In a recent Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development survey (June 2007) 84% of business’s surveyed said they experience recruitment difficulties. 83% of Private Sector businesses said they found it difficult to hold on to employees with labour turnover rates of between 18.1 and 22.6%. Recruitment now costs businesses between £4,333 and £7,750 per new hire which if you are an SME can be a huge chunk out of your profit.

CIPD Conference Harrogate

September 25th, 2007

Hi everyone

Just thought I would pop down my thoughts regarding the CIPD conference at Harrogate that I attended last week. I went on Tuesday, day 1, and was really surprised at how quiet it was. Was it this quiet for the other two days? Do you think the change in date has had an impact on the lack of attendees?

The new free 30 min seminars were excellent, I attended one on creativity which gave me a few ideas on how to get people thinking outside the box. I did hear that one of the seminars was cancelled which disappointed a few.

Exhibitors as always did not disappoint with their expertise and great giveaways.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Vanessa

Building Rapport through Improved Communication

September 25th, 2007

Q Have you ever wondered why sometimes when you meet someone for the first time you just click, it is as if you have known them for years? and with others it is a disaster from the start?

Q Have you ever considered why certain customers really like your approach but others don’t give you the time of day?

Q Have you ever had the best products, at the best price and the best brand but you still don’t entice the customer?

This workshop is designed with your customers in mind.

Experienced business people know that customers are unlikely to buy your product or service or idea if they don’t like you. (Unless, of course, you are fortunate in being in a sellers’ market.) First your customer must ‘buy’ you - only then will they consider ‘buying’ your product or service or idea.

I know it is a cliché but people do actually buy from people they like .
This practical workshop will help participants develop advanced interpersonal skills necessary to build rapport - allowing them to be more effective in their relationships with customers.

Workshop Objectives
By the end of this workshop attendees will be able to:

· Communicate more effectively
· Identify and understand the different ways we take in and process information
· Build rapport with others
· Influence those around them
· Read personality types
· Deal with their difficult person type

I am back on the subject of “scores on the doors”

September 5th, 2007

The food standards agency have just published the results of a pilot scheme in Edinburgh, in which 85% of the food businesses participating in the scheme currently meet the legal requirements for food hygiene.

783 outlets have passed their most recent food hygiene inspections; 132 require improvement and 15 are still awaiting their next inspection. This compares with 565 passes (77%), 114 “improvement required” and 48 awaiting inspection when the pilot scheme went live last November.

Other schemes are being piloted in Perth, parts of Aberdeen, Fife and Renfrewshire. Over 1000 food outlets have been asked to participate and display their scores prominently on the door or window of their premises.

Clearly the scheme seems to incentivise food businesses to focus on food safety and is set to get much better with a series of roadshows in Scotland to raise awareness among the general public. The first of these roadshows is in Castle Street, Edinburgh on Thursday , 20th September.

Whilst these pilot schemes are similar to the English “scores on the doors” trials that I have described previously they have a simplified scoring system.

A “pass” indicates that a business has broadly met the legal requirements.

“Improvement required” indicates that a business has failed to meet these requirements and has been issued with an “Improvement required” certificate.

So can we get some discussion going here. Are these schemes good or bad? Should one of these schemes be rolled out nationally? Is there a better way? 85% trading legally?
